Perfect Wedding Venue
Will you be having hundreds of guests?
A tiny location will not accommodate them with much success. Do you want your pastor to preside? If he only performs marriage ceremonies inside your church, then a hotel ceremony won't be an option. As you make your wedding plans and consider your options, you will find that you are able to compromise happily on some things, and yet not at all on the non-negotiables.
Casual or formal?
A beach wedding can be beautiful, but it's rarely the choice of a couple who wants the whole nine yards of formality. By the same token, the couple who prefers the extreme casualness of jeans and bare feet will not choose to marry in a cathedral. Of course, these are exaggerations, but it's sometimes difficult to decide what to change about the 'con' aspect in order to preserve the 'pro'. Do keep an open mind and consider all options. You will know if a compromise feels right or not, and if you do decide to compromise, be absolutely sure that you can live with the choice.
Consider the climate
Think ahead and consider the climate and time of year. Have you always wanted an outdoor wedding surrounded by the lush flora of a formal garden, singing birds, and flitting butterflies? This will be virtually impossible in the dead of winter with snow and ice on the ground. Think ahead and do your research.
Your budget
Always keep in mind how much money you have budgeted for your chosen location. Remember that if you over spend on your choice of venue then you will either have to under spend on some other aspect or go over budget. Get a detailed list of what is and isn't furnished for the price you will be paying. Know ahead of time if you must pad the cost of the venue by paying for extras.
Availability and time restraints
Be absolutely clear on the availability of the venue. Do you want a late evening wedding followed by a reception in the same place that goes on into the wee hours of the morning? If so, then choosing a venue that closes at midnight won't work for you. Does the venue limit you to three hours availability in the afternoon and you want six? You will have to decide which you want more - the extra three hours or the venue.
Package deals
Some wedding locations are package deals and are all-inclusive. They provide virtually everything. Even so, if you will want to have a very specific list of what they offer and what they don't. If there is something you want that is different from the package, or that is in addition to what they provide, you will need not only their assurance that you can have it, but you will want that assurance in writing.
Protect yourself
While you are at it, get everything in writing. Oral promises are nothing. Make sure you have a legal-worthy document that covers all agreements and also covers any foreseeable difficulties. Include contingency plans in the agreement. These documents aren't often used in courts of law, but the mere presence of them creates an atmosphere of obligation on the part of the provider and they give you peace of mind knowing that if they fail to deliver what you agreed on, you have recourse. No matter where you choose to be married, your venue should be one that will make your wedding day as memorable and sentimental as you want it to be.
